RENOVATING YOUR HOME

Renovating your home is a big decision. Whether you decide to give your kitchen a face lift or to completely renovate your home, there will be lots of work involved. First you have to determine whether you are able to do the job properly on your own. If you have no prior experience in renovations, it’s probably best to hire a contractor. Even a home owner who is experienced in renovations will usually hire a contractor based on the amount of time and skill level involved in the project.

FIND A CONTRACTOR

Before you hire a contractor, remember to look for the qualities that are important. Always take time to do your research and never put down a deposit the same day you meet your potential contractor unless you are absolutely sure he can provide you with everything you need when renovating your home. Ask your contractor about their experience and skill level.

Find a contractor who is familiar with projects like yours and is aware of the complications that can occur, and most importantly, how to solve them.

QUESTIONS TO ASK:

• Ask your contractor how long they have been in business.
• Find out what licenses your contractor holds. Electrical and plumbing certificates?
• What field do you specialize in?
• Do you have experience with projects similar to mine?
• Do you have a crew that you will work with, or will you be sub contracting the whole job, the entire job or a portion of the job?
• Are you equipped with problem solving solutions that may come along with the job ( ? )
• Explain the clean up process (materials, fine dust), how and when does this clean up occur?
• Will you have a set work schedule?
• Do you provide a warranty? Provide details for the warranty such as length of time, and what the warranty covers.
• Do you liability and workers compensation insurance?
• Will you have with a written contract? (If the answer is no, request one)
• Do you ensure the proper permits have been granted prior to commencing your work? (Electrical, plumbing, building)?
• Are you equipped with all of the supplies, tools you will need to properly finish the job?
